Is it allowed to keep pets in Islam? Buying pets in Islam.
One can keep permissible animals as pets as long as he/she treat and feed them properly. The permissible animals are many like fish, birds, cats etc.
Impermissible are dogs & pigs but keeping guard dogs and hunting dogs are permissible.
In a narration of Muslim, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said:
Narrated by al-Bukhaari (3225) and Muslim (2106) that “The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog.”
Keeping other animals like cats or birds are permissible and can be verified from the fact that one of the companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Abu Hurayra was named after the cat which used to accompany him and the following hadith:
Al-Bukhaari (6203) and Muslim (2150) narrated that Anas RA said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the best of people in attitude. I had a brother who was called Abu ‘Umayr. He (the narrator) said: I think he said: He was a weanling. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came and saw him, he said: “Abu ‘Umayr, what happened to the nughayr (nightingale)?” He used to play with it.
What is impermissible is showing extravagance. One should not spend thousands or millions on buying pets and taking care of them.
Another thing is that the animal must be treated kindly and must be provided proper food and shelter as there is a hadith in which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has told about a woman who went to hell because of her neglect of a cat which she detained and it died of hunger.
And Allah knows best!
