In Islam, what are the things a woman is not supposed to do while she is menstruating? [menstruation period in islam; menstruation cycle in islam; islamqa menstruation masjid; islam menstruation days; period days in islam]
There are many ruling related with menstruation, but the most important ones to keep in mind are written below.
Things women are not allowed to do during menstruation:
Prayer -
It is forbidden for a menstruating woman to pray both obligatory (fardh) and voluntary (nafl) prayers, and they are not valid if she does them.
Fasting -
It is forbidden for a menstruating woman to fast, whether it is an obligatory or a nafl fast, and it is not valid if she does it. But she has to make up any obligatory fasts that she misses, because of the hadith of ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: “That (menses) used to happen to us and we were commanded to make up fasts but we were not commanded to make up prayers”
Tawa'af of the Ka'bah -
It is forbidden for a menstruating woman to circumambulate the Ka’bah, whether that is obligatory or nafl, and it is not valid if she does it, because the Prophet (PBUH) said to ‘Aa’ishah when she got her menses: “Do everything that the pilgrims do, but do not circumambulate the House until you become pure”
Staying in the mosque -
It is forbidden for the menstruating woman to stay in the mosque.
Intercourse -
It is forbidden for her husband to have intercourse with her, and it is forbidden for her to allow him to do so.
Divorce -
It is forbidden for a husband to divorce a menstruating woman during her menses.
With regard to dhikr, takbeer, saying SubhanAllah, praising Allah, saying Bismillaah when eating and so on, and reading hadiths, fiqh and du’aa’s, or saying Ameen to du’aa’s, and listening to or reading Qur’an, none of these things are forbidden to her. Though some scholars say that she is not allowed to touch Qur'an but there is no such hadith which mention this directly and same goes for hadith books.
And Allah knows best!
