Topic #26: Doing wazifa in Islam, is it permissible?

Doing wazifa (implying & reciting specific verses for the purpose of seeking specific favors) in Islam, is it permissible?

Doing wazifa (implying & reciting specific verses for the purpose of seeking specific favors) in Islam, is it permissible? [wazifa karna kaisa hai; kya wazifa karna jaiz hai; kya wazifa karna sahi hai]

It is impermissible to single out certain verses of the Qur’an to recite for specific purposes, unless there is specific shar’i evidence to that effect, such as if there is a sahih hadith from the Prophet (peace be upon him) concerning the virtues of a certain ayah or surah, which the Muslim may recite with the aim of attaining those virtues and benefits.

But if a person selects for himself various verses of the Qur’an to recite certain times at certain times, and claims that they may bring relief from hardship or help at times of crisis, and he compiles them in a book to be recited regularly by the Muslim as part of a recommended wird (habit/practice), then that is more akin to innovation (bid’ah) than following the Prophet (peace be upon him). It is better for the Muslim to avoid that and not follow this example or act upon it.

Sahih Muslim Hadith 1885: Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah That the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) said in a sermon: The best speech is that which is embodied in the Book of Allah, the Al Quran; and the best guidance is the guidance given by me, Mohammed (peace be upon him). The most evil affairs are the innovations, and every innovation is an error.

The entire Qur’an is blessing and reward and goodness, but claiming that a certain verse has a certain effect, especially in the case of these claims that they can relieve difficulty and financial hardships, is something that requires evidence.

And Allah knows best!
